An Interview With Charlie Ingham

Founded by Charlie Ingham in 2012, Soho Bespoke creates made-to-measure eyewear with an unerring focus on hand made craft and luxury.

When Cabbages & Roses met Charlie, we immediately fell in Love with each others’ brands, most especially because we both have a deep understanding for craft and the hand made.

The collaboration quickly fell into place.

Working closely together, the 1960’s inspired collection was designed to personify both brands perfectly.

Charlie’s bespoke sunglasses for Cabbages & Roses are hand made in a small family run factory, established in 1962, sitting at the foot of the Dolomites in Italy – each piece made in the traditional manner with no less than 32 stages in the production process.

Each hand inserted screw, each frame, and each hinge will have been riveted and polished entirely by hand.  Every frame is checked by the owner of the factory before being carefully packed up.

Processes are all done by hand on each pair of glasses.

The beautifully coloured acetate frames have been chosen for their wide ranging appeal - contrasting and blending with all the Cabbages & Roses collections, perfect for spring, summer, autumn and winter.

The leather cases are beautifully hand crafted in a small London workshop.

Each case uses one piece of Italian leather, hand dyed and hand stitched by craftsmen.

We are thrilled by our collaboration on this project with Charlie and are immensely pleased by the results of our joint labour!

Here is our interview with Charlie

First of all, can you tell us a bit about what you do?
I have a bespoke eyewear company. I design sunglasses and spectacles for individuals according to their facial features and personality.

If you had to describe Cabbages & Roses in a sentence, what would it be?
C&R epitomises quirky British style to me.
(I love everything they sell from the fabrics to the British made clothes!)

Where did you grow up?

Brussels, Belgium.

What is your favourite part of the day?

Drinks at sunset.

What is your favourite flower?

A Passionflower.

What is your favourite thing about what you do?
The interesting people that I meet and making people happy.

The mountains in Austria, where my aunt lives.

If you were stuck on an island for a year and could only take one book with you what would it be?

The Count of Monte Cristo by Duma

What would your last meal be?
This is such a hard one because it changes almost weekly, but at the moment I would go for prawn cocktail, followed by a Tiroler Groschtl with kraut salad (a deeply comforting Austrian classic – my aunt makes a killer one). I’d probably have cheese too. All flushed down with a lovely French red wine.

What has been your proudest moment?
When I made my first pair of spectacles.

What makes you happy?
Designing and making spectacles or sunglasses.

Who would be your perfect dinner party guests, dead or alive?

Bjork, Bowie and pretty much all of the surrealists.

Your desert island luxury?
An open air cinema with a selection of films. (I stole this idea from Penelope Wilton’s desert island discs, but it’s insanely good.)

What is your favourite piece from the C&R collection?

It’s hard to chose but one!! But I love the green suit.

Desert island discs - you can choose 4
Venus As a Boy – Bjork.
Let’s Dance – Bowie.

Gimme Shelter – Rolling Stones.

(The above change weekly too)
