Mothers Day

GILLY & POPPY BELL

As it is mother's day, we asked our wonderful deputy shop manager Poppy and her mama Gilly to dress up in our new collection so that we could photograph them.

We first set eyes on Poppy & Gilly in 2014 when they wandered into our summer brocante. A vision in Cabbages & Roses with Nettle (their dog) at their side.

Later that summer, Poppy applied for a job and we knew instantly it was meant to be.

Here are the questions we asked them both.

FIRSTLY AND MOST IMPORTANTLY PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR FISH SALLY –

POPPY: Sally is my (our) 23 year old goldfish who recently became very famous with over 40 million internet hits. She has an illness called Swim Bladder Disease which doesn’t let her float anymore. My very clever boyfriend made her a life jacket so she can swim again! (She is called Sally after my hairdresser who cut my hair age 2.)

You can watch her video here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KPLDpqlQhI

GILLY: Sally is our 23 year old goldfish. As she is so old she is now limited to swimming along the bottom of her tank only. She recently attracted much media attention when Poppy’s clever boyfriend Aidan, made her a float to swim freely. Since her rise to stardom she has been treated to a large deluxe ‘retirement’ tank.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST DISCOVER CABBAGES & ROSES?

POPPY: My mama used to cut out C&R magazine pictures and stick them in her collage book. The fabrics have been on every curtain, bed and dressing room floor in my parent’s house for about 10 years so it became obvious I had no choice but to fall in love with C&R and here I am!

GILLY: I saw a picture of a model in a magazine about 15 years ago wearing a patched up tweed jacket and a billowing Hatley Cerise skirt. I cut the picture out and still have it in my ‘little book’. I’ve been a dedicated follower ever since.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE COLOUR?

POPPY: It is obviously pale pink.

GILLY: Pretty, pale, clean fresh colours. Pinks, blues and white.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FILM?

POPPY: I am #sorrynotsorry but it has to be Step Brothers. It makes me cry with laughter every single time.

GILLY: The classic animated 101 Dalmations. I have to watch it every Christmas. More recently it would be Lion. I was riveted from beginning to end.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK?

POPPY: I love all kinds of books from thrillers to just nice story tales. I read one last Summer called Man of the Helm by Nina Stibbe. The humour in it is very dry and made me laugh so loud that strangers would look at me!

GILLY: Beatrix Potter’s, Jemima Puddleduck. I was born and bred in Lancashire so when I was little there were many enjoyable family trips to nearby Sawrey. I loved reading this story to Poppy just like my Mummy read it to me.

WHAT IS IT THAT YOU LOVE ABOUT CABBAGES?

POPPY: Cabbages is life. I love that I can match my dressing gown to my wallpaper to my cushions. I love that it ‘just is’ and doesn’t follow fashion houses. I love seeing the process from start to finish within the Sydney Street store. I love how much thought goes into every detail of every item and I love how clever our designers Lettie and Christina are. What on earth would we wear without them, I ask myself nearly every day!

GILLY: I love how uniquely British C&R is and how extremely pretty and delicate some of the clothes are- especially the Summer dresses. My favorite ever item is an old tweed jacket I bought many, many years ago that I wear year after year. The shop is the most beautiful in London and I don’t know where I’d be without it. The clothes and fabrics within it stand apart from any others and I always feel special wearing them. My favorite fabric has to be the Catherine Rose in pink.

DO YOU SHARE CLOTHES?

POPPY: I think we share our taste in fashion rather than our actual clothes. We are always introducing one another to new brands and shops.

GILLY: When Poppy’s home she helps herself to my wardrobe. She gives me very good style advice and helps me keep a bit more up to date.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO TOGETHER?

POPPY: Sitting on the floor by the fire, eating and chatting.

GILLY: I adore meeting up with Poppy for a jam packed day in London. We do everything from art galleries to prom concerts, design exhibitions to shows. We always find a great new restaurant to eat at and then of course there’s the shopping.

WHAT/WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE IN THE WORLD?

POPPY: The Beach House, South Milton, Devon. I went with my parents a few years ago and it changed my life; the seafood is unreal. My boyfriend also told me he loved me for the first time there so it will forever be my happy place.

GILLY: It has to be Salcombe in Devon, where we are lucky enough to have a little house. You can’t beat it! Closer to home it would definitely be Chatsworth in Derbyshire where I am a volunteer gardener. If you’ve never visited then you really must.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT EACH OTHER?

POPPY: My mama is sooo kind and has given me the best advice my whole life. She makes me hoot with laughter so often. She also puts about 30 emojis in every text which is the best thing.

GILLY: Poppy whizzes in and out of our life full of smiles, excitement and chatter. She’s always planning her next adventure/ holiday/ meal! She inspires me and I am very proud of her.

WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST ANNOYING ABOUT ONE ANOTHER?

POPPY: When she refuses to buy me a new C&R coat every season hehe.

GILLY: As she whizzes in and out of our house she leaves a trail of wet wipes, sweetie wrappers, half drunk glasses of squash and C&R clothes all over the place.

LASTLY, AS POPPY HAS AN INSTAGRAM PAGE DEDICATED TO HER LOVE OF FOOD - @POPPYS.PLATES AND IS ABOUT TO BE ON A NEW AMATEUR CHEF TV PROGRAMME, WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT YOUR MOST FAVORITE THING TO EAT IS?

POPPY: CRAB. LOBSTER. SWEETS.

GILLY: Crab, lobster, sweeties- SNAP!
